Dish of the Day – Cuban Ropa Vieja

Cuba is not only known for the exclusive aromatic and flavored cigars, sexy Latin dance, intoxicating rum, gorgeous women or baseball but the the island country is equally marked for its mesmerising cuisine. Whether it is the spicy Cuban pork chops or the sweet-bitter molten chocolate hot cocoa, Cuban cuisine is well rated when it comes to ultimately satisfying your taste buds.

Cuban Ropa Vieja or Crock Pot (Oamc) is the perfect blend of rich spices of the Caribbean and red meaty beef. Beef is the staple food of Cuba. There are varieties of beef stew served worldwide but if you really want something tangy and spicy, Ropa Vieja is the ultimate choice. It may be a served as a regular dish or a perfect main course exclusively for dinner parties with extra spice, cream, garnishing and unique Cuban rum made from molasses. It is often accompanied with olives and capers.


2 lbs Beef flank steak,

1 tablespoon Vegetable oil,

1 cup Beef broth,

8 ounce Tomato sauce,

6 ounce Tomato paste,

1 small Onion,

1 Green bell pepper,

2 chopped Garlic cloves,

1 teaspoon fresh chopped Cilantro,

1 tablespoon Olive oil,

1 tablespoon Vinegar.

Preparation Method:- 

1. Take a skillet. Add vegetable oil. Place it over medium heat. Brown the steak for five minutes, per side. Now put the steak in slow cooker. Take a large bowl.

2. Add tomato sauce, onion, olive oil, bell pepper, garlic, beef broth, tomato paste, cilantro and vinegar. Mix well and transfer it to the slow cooker. Stir well along with the steak.

3. Simmer for ten hours or cook over high heat for four hours. Keep stirring from time to time. Shred meat once cooked. Serve the delectable crock pot with steamed rice.
